Back to Nature - Kuala Berang

My Son Daniel so excited to cast too..

Since last month I don't have a any story to post a new thread on this blog, it is also due to my frustrations on my trip to Lake Kenyir recently & and also because of that I can't surf on the beach due to bad weather, but any way, on the December12, 2009 I received the SMS from Jay and telling me that one of our team member from Kuala Berang (En.Mat) have caught a 4kg Hampala (Sebarau) at our favorite spot and quickly we arrange a trip for a follow up at the same spot to cast.

After we was casting for an hour En.Mat came and joint us to try again for an afternoon cast and according to him there is a few time he lose the strike of the good strong fight from this creature and after 3 hours we were there, then we decided to walk off and will come back next weekend, I manage to upload few picture of the Hampala that he caught earlier in the morning.

Now will you believe it

Looking for TARPON But it end up with MILK FISH

Since the Monsoon fall was so heavy for the pass three week's, then I rest my 15th footer Surf rod and start my lure casting along the river and pond around my area, I found out one nice port with a large and long river pond at Mengabang Bakong behind the INSTEP which is also in Batu Rakit, I went twice to this port, but my lure casting is don't work at all, many lure I been trying to cast, but it end up with frustration, the fish is jumping up from the surface of the river from every corner, As I predict that it is look like the TARPON fish, then since that the lure don't work , I decided to bring my friend Hashim the Fly Fisherman, then he manage to catch a nice fish, so we know that the species in this river pond are not TARPON but MILK FISH, it really a surprise to us where we though that this species have long gone.

Surf Fishing - PAGAR BESI

After two weekend I been trying my luck on this beautiful beach of Pagar Besi in the area of the most popular Batu Rakit Beach, At the end of the fishing day I manage to catch the 2kg Sting Ray, even though that so many time I got frustrated either the leader line cut off or hooked on the rock, one thing good about this beach is becouse of the rocky shore and with a lots of small fishes running aroud which will attract the mega sizes of fishes and Rays. as we know Terengganu have a longers beach in Malaysia and sure there are many more to explore..

Surf Fishing Pagar Besi

After a two days try, and at lease 4 hours for every session at Pagar Besi Beach during the Deepavali holiday recently, I was so frustrated that I just cough a small fishes even though that I have a strong nibble for three to four time, any way it make me so release after one of the anglers bro Pak Lee manage to catch a 20kg Ray, this video was recorded by bro Bahar and I attached here is only the last moment when this creature were bring up to the shore and sorry for the inconvenience due to the video image is upside down..what a great fight...Enjoy it.

Surf Fishing - Pagar Besi Beach, Batu Rakit

It been almost a month and a half I didn't go out for Surf Fishing due to Fasting Month and Raya mood, Since that now the weather is showing their color of the MONSOON is coming ahead, I decided to survey the Paga Besi Beach which is on the same stretch of Batu Rakit Beach too. On Friday 9th of October we manage to catch a 3kg Ray, and others small fish of Garupa, Sweet lip, snapper but there is three time when one of the rod went into the sea and the creature manage to escape, and twice happen to me when the creature escape too. I promise to my self to repeat again next week if the weather permitted. I forgotten to bring my digital camera but manage to snap few with my handy and sorry if the quality is not that nice.

Racce trip to Lake Kenyir

Last Monday I have a change to follow the Terengganu Marina Club members on their recce trip to Lake Kenyir, We depart from Pengkalang Gawi at 9.00am to Bewah Cave & Taat Cave, then stop by at Sungai Petang Resort to visit Kelah sanctuary and Lunch at Petang Resort before we went to Sungai Lasir and back to Pengkalang Gawi.

Surf fishing is the saltwater equivalent of fishing from the shore of a freshwater lake or the bank of a river. It is a method of fishing that provides access to a wide variety of fish species, often in close proximity to home. For many people, it is the most convenient or only a place to pursue their hobby, especially if they don’t own or have access to a boat.
Surf fishing is popular and widely practiced along the shore throughout the year, anglers will be found on beaches along the oceans,harbors and bays.

Why People Surf Fish
There are a number of reasons why people find surf fishing to be a good alternative to other types of fishing. One important reason is that, because many beaches are owned and managed by public government agencies, there is good public access to these areas. Another factor that brings anglers to the surf is the fact that there is no need to own a boat to catch fish. This saves money and time, particularly in the areas of boat maintenance and travel. Some fishermen do not like to fish from a boat, preferring to keep their feet on relatively solid ground.
Some anglers choose to surf from the shore because they feel there is greater social contact and camaraderie among fishermen who congregate on the beach and better opportunities for enjoying the surrounding sights and sounds of the surf. For many, it is a more peaceful fishing environment. Still others are simply attracted by the challenge presented by conditions that seems to give every advantage to the prey, rather than to the angler.

When People Surf Fish
Without a few exceptions, surf fishing is possible at any time, night or day, throughout the year, regardless of weather. However, the majority of surf fishing is conducted around sunrise and sunset from January to December If Monsoon permitted (December,January & February). While many experienced surf fishermen claim that overcast days are best, it is likely the greatest number of fishermen descend on the beaches on warm, sunny days, particularly weekends. Most knowledgeable surf anglers seek times just before high tide, especially when that occurs in the morning around dawn.

Species Available
While species availability varies from region to region and season to season, surf fishing usually gives anglers access to a large selection of fish. Casting from shore can bring in species ranging from more numerous small fish to large trophy fish.

Many surf fishermen go to the shore to catch small fish up to 5 or 10 pounds, perhaps just enough for a nice dinner.
More experienced surf anglers may try to increase the challenge by seeking larger sport fish, though most also provide good table fare. Species in the 10 to 100 pound.

Equipment and Casting
Generally, tackle selection for surf fishing is a matter of personal choice and fishing objectives. On any given beach, you are likely to find light, medium and heavy tackle. In some instances, the conditions of the surf will determine what kind of tackle is selected. The distance necessary to cast bait to productive areas will also influence the type of tackle chosen. Those casting long distances with heavy bait will usually use longer rods such as a 13-foot model. However, it is not uncommon for anglers to have success with 6 and 8-foot rods.
Because of wave action, it is usually necessary to use a heavy sinker up to 4 to 6 ounces or more to ensure that bait holds to the bottom. Wave action also determines line weight. Most commonly, anglers use 15- to 30-pound line, though the range can be quite large, especially on the heavier side.
In most surf fishing situations, the key to the success is casting distance. Therefore it is important that anglers learn appropriate casting techniques that allow one to cast far out to the water. It is not uncommon to need to cast from 50 to 150 yards. More experienced surf fishermen are capable of casting 250 yards or more.

In addition to rod and reel, the surf fisherman needs terminal tackle and bait or lure. Terminal tackle is the equipment at the far end of the line: hooks, swivels, lines and leaders.

Dedicated surfcasters usually possess an array of terminal and other tackle, with fishing rods and reels of different lengths and actions, and lures and baits of different weights and capabilities. Depending on fishing conditions and the type of fish they are trying to catch, such surfcasters tailor bait and terminal tackle to rod and reel and the size and species of fish targeted. Reels and other equipment need to be constructed so they resist the corrosive and abrasive effects of salt and sand.
